Angus Davis

Angus has been an entrepreneur, executive and investor in the Internet since its commercialization.

In 1995, while a high school student in Rhode Island, Angus was an early employee at Intelecom Data Systems, one of the first commercial Internet Service Providers. In 1996, bypassing college, Angus joined Netscape, becoming the company’s youngest employee at age 18, where he was product manager for the Netscape Navigator Web browser, now known as Mozilla Firefox.

In 1999, Angus co-founded Tellme Networks in Mountain View, California to bring the power of the Internet to the phone. Tellme pioneered many advancements in speech recognition for enterprise contact center and mobile search applications. In 2006, BusinessWeek named Angus one of the top ten entrepreneurs under age 30. In 2007, after growing to profitability with revenue over $100 million, Microsoft acquired Tellme in its then-largest acquisition of a private firm, for more than $800 million. Angus led speech recognition strategy at Microsoft for 2 years.

In 2009, Angus founded Upserve in Providence, Rhode Island, which as CEO he grew to one of the largest restaurant point of sale platforms with nearly 10,000 customers. Forbes named him one of “America’s most promising CEOs” and Upserve was recognized as the “Best Place to Work” for six years straight under his leadership. After partnering with Vista Equity Partners to grow the business, in 2018 Angus transitioned to a board role, maintaining his ownership in the company. In 2020, Lightspeed (NYSE: LSPD) acquired Upserve in a $430 million stock and cash deal.

In 2019, Angus joined Foundation Capital as a General Partner where he led over $120 million of investments in various early-stage companies in the financial technology, artificial intelligence and enterprise software sectors. In 2024, Angus transitioned to a Board Partner role.

In 2025, Angus co-founded Alianza Capital to invest in revitalizing housing in Puerto Rico. The firm provides capital for real estate investments in Puerto Rico.

Angus and his wife Joanna live in Dorado, Puerto Rico and have three sons. Angus serves as a director of Dorado Cares, which helps low-income communities in Puerto Rico. A native of Rhode Island, Angus previously served on the boards the Preservation Society of Newport County, Saint Michael’s Country Day School, The Rhode Island Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education, The Providence Foundation, The Center for Education Reform, and Rhode Island Mayoral Academies, among other causes. He was instrumental in establishing the Rhode Island corps of Teach for America, opening the Blackstone Valley Prep public charter school and creating Rhode Island’s “Mayoral Academy” statute.
